Ideas Have Consequences #5 From Him, Thru Him, To Him Are All Things!

Although most people worry about whether they will outlive their money, it is more important to consider whether we will outlive our faith. Being taken captive by the world's ideas, erroneous doctrine, and selfish desires prevents us from living a biblical worldview. In this last message of the series, Ideas Have Consequences, Ray presents the idea that all things flow from God, through God and to God. To Him be glory forever. This message is a powerful conclusion to this series and will cause you to look at where your life is and whether you will outlive your faith.

Ideas Have Consequences #4 Essentials of the Christian Faith

There are 14 essential, non-negotiable doctrines that support the Gospel of Salvation. Ranging from the the Doctrine of Original Sin to the Personal Bodily Return of Jesus Christ including, but not limited to, His death and resurrection, grace and faith, the Trinity and the oneness of God. Knowing these doctrines and understanding how the build on one another helps us to establish a firm foundation in our faith.

Ideas Have Consequences #3 Why Doctrine Matters

Paul proclaims that Timothy must "preach the Word," because the time will come when the church will not endure sound doctrine but turn aside to myths. The day will come, according to Paul, when the church will want their "ears tickled" and accumulate teachers that are according to their own desires. Paul's remedy is to preach the word.

Ideas Have Consequences #2: Complete in Christ

Circumcised with the circumcision of Christ, while we were dead in our transgressions, God made us alive together with Jesus, by canceling out the certificate of debt which consisted in decrees against us. Christ put the hostility to death by killing it, nailing it to the Cross.

Don't Be Taken Captive or It's All About Me

Today we can be taken captive by the philosophy of me. It is all about me. Supporting that is the idea that all we need to do is improve somethings about myself, act accordingly and the world will be a better place. Beginning with philosophy, down through education and psychology right through to religion, the idea that man is basically good is a major premise. Ideas do make the world go 'round.

The idea that man is not that bad and only needs some modifications to improve life is a lie sold to the human race. Evil is a reality that needs to be seen and taken into account. However, God has given us His answer in Jesus Christ in whom all the fullness dwell in bodily form. And, in Him, we have been made complete.

Admitting our sin is the right way to improve ourselves. Losing ourselves for His sake is the path to finding ourselves. Jesus Christ is truly the answer.

A More Execellent Way

A More Excellent Way: Love-Outline

Introduction

Overview of Paul's letter to the church at Corinth.
 Paul brought the message of Christ to Corinth around A.D. 50
 He visited Corinth again around A.D. 53
 The letter was written while at Ephesus somewhere from A.D. 55-57. The second letter to the Corinthian church was written about 6 months later.
 The first letter to the Corinthian church was written to instruct them in dealing with several issues that were threatening to destroy the church.

Paul addresses numerous issues with this church
1	Divisions that split the church
	2	Immorality
3	Members suing one another in court
	4	Fornication
5	Expressions of gluttony and favoritism during the communion meal
	6	Disorderliness in worship services
	7	Teaching un-biblical doctrine

Spiritual Gifts 1 Corinthians 12:1-7 1 Corinthians 12:12-14, 20
Varieties of gifts (charisma, endowments of the HS); the same Spirit
Varieties of ministries (diakonia, service of believers), the same Lord
Varieties of effects (energeia, what is produced by . . .), the same God

Many members (melos, a limb of the body; but one body
(soma, the whole body: metaphorically the whole church)

A question of logic: What is more important, varieties of ministries, or one Lord?

What is more important, many members, or one body?

Key Point #1
We must acknowledge that our human nature (our flesh) wants to make the gift, the ministry, the effect more important because it shines the light on me. We want the member (me) to be considered over the unity of the body.

1 Corinthians 12:31-13:3
Whatever we do by the power of the Holy Spirit is null without love. Love is the preeminent expression of Christ within our church.

John 15:12-17
Love is commanded. That is not in the love songs.
Love is the ultimate sacrifice. That is not in the love song.
Love is focused on those who do what He commands. That is not in the love song.

Key Point #2
We are commanded to love the body of Christ as we love Christ himself. The body of Christ is His expression on this earth. We are God's letter written to our world.

I exhort you to love the body of Christ. How is that accomplished?

1. Love the body by belonging to a local church.
 I see no examples in scripture where Christians live apart from a local church. They are either starting on, ministering within one, visiting one, or being sent from one.
 Today's norm of varieties of churches (but one Lord?) is different from what we see in the Bible. This is not the design of the New Testament, but it is what we have. We still must be a member that is attached. No amputees or disembodied limbs.
 You do not have to belong to this church, but you need to belong to one.
2. Love the body by studying to be approved by God.
 Read and study your bible to understand God and grow in your knowledge of Jesus Christ.
 Teach one another from the scripture.
 Apply scripture as the final rule of life for ourselves and for one another.
3. Love the body by participating substantially in church life.
 Be a disciple; make disciples.
 Employ Spiritual gifts for the benefit of the body.
o Serve one another.
o Show compassion for one another.
o Exhort one another in growing toward Godliness
 Hold yourself and others to God's standard of character and behavior.
o Do you love the body enough to keep yourself apart from sin?
o Do you love God more than you fear man?
o Do you hate sin more than the difficulty of confronting it?

Waiting Seeking and Receiving

During the past month we heard from Bill regarding “How did we get here?”

And from Tom the past two weeks speaking of The Crucified Man, and the Fruit of the Spirit.

I’m going to continue in that same vein in recognizing where we are and moving towards where we need to be.

A few days ago my dentist asked me if I was going to do anything special this weekend. I told him about today and he asked me a rather interesting question. What is it that you are going to say that will make it interesting to the congregation?

I told him that because I am a part of this congregation and a part of this people I usually end up preaching to myself as well as the church. In that I answered, empathy.

Typically when I have the opportunity to bring a word to LBCC it’s been burning in my spirit for months, to the point where I can’t stand it any longer. Last time when I spoke of Hope that leads to faith was such a word. This time I had three distinct words.

A word about the restoration of relationships, a word about honoring those that serve among us and a word about waiting on the Lord. All three I believe are relevant and needed for our church. Today the message is entitled…

Fruit

22. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23. gentleness, self-control ; against such things there is no law. 24. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.

Looking at each of the fruits on this list and seeing how God wants us to walk in the things of the spirit

Run With Endurance

"How did I get here?" Most of us at some point have or will ask ourselves this question at some point. The question has us evaluating our steps and actions to determine how we came to a certain place. But it also has serious implications about what we think of God, His goodness, and His plan for us. When we read the Bible, we see that we are not alone in these struggles. Instead we see that God's Word is filled with men and women who found themselves far from how they expected life to be. In all of these accounts, God was faithful to His promises and purpose; through them reminds us to press on with endurance so He can do His work in us and through us.

Nehemiah #12 - Conclusion

This message looks at the work Nehemiah called the people of Jerusalem and those of surrounding towns to. It looks at the idea of having a "building permit" and calling people to work in the mess to bring about glory for God. Looking back through the messages preached, Ray brings out the high points of each message.

Nehemiah #11 - Seeing the Work Through to the End- No Compromise

This 11th message in the series of Nehemiah demonstrates an attitude of "no compromise" when it comes the law of God. God's people had compromised on many sides, . . . they'd taken foreign wives, bought and sold on the Sabbath, and the worst, allowed Tobiah a place in the Temple. Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem to once again, demonstrate his zeal for God and leadership abilities.

Ray applies this message to the church today by showing how our commitment to Jesus Christ must be simple and pure. We must not compromise or let the devil deceive us from a simple and pure devotion to Christ. He then goes on to discuss some of the areas where we can easily compromise and how easy it is to be seduced. "Not lagging behind in diligence and being fervent in spirit," are two ways to stand against compromise and walk in God's love.

Nehemiah #10 - Keeping Worship Pure

Nehemiah records the effect of God's Word when Ezra reads the Law. The people of Jerusalem have rebuilt the walls but now they restore worship the way God had intended it. The reading of the Law prompts repentance and adherence to God's commands. Ezra's example of commitment, his interpretation of true worship, and exhortation caused a revival in Jerusalem.

The message for the church today is that worship must proceed from the revelation of God borne in the Scirpture. Worship is not experience only, but the way we offer our lives to God on a daily basis. True worship, pure worship is what we offer to God in faith every day. What the church does on Sunday mornings ought to be a culmination of lives given to God every day.

What Does the Resurrection Mean?

The Resurrection changed all of history. It changed church history and human history. It set in motion the world's most popular religion.
The Resurrection means God dealt with our sins but also dealt with us as sinners. He put to death the "old man." If any one is in Christ he is a new creation, the old things have passed away and behold new things have come.
The Resurrection opens the way for the church to spread the gospel of the kingdom of God.

Nehemiah #6 Having a Mind to Work

The people of Jerusalem finished the wall to half its height in 52 days because they had a mind to work. Looking at key concept to get our minds around Ray presents a strong argument for working for the Lord

Nehemiah#4 - The Power and Purpose of Prayer

The power and purpose of prayer and intercession are discussed here. Prayer is more than asking God for stuff; it is finding out what is on His heart and offering ourselves to be the answer. This is exemplified by Nehemiah in his inquiring of the people of Judah and then giving himself to be the answer.
